EXIT GLACIER, Seward Alaska
The Exit Glacier Area is a fun destination for visitors of all ages and abilities. Several short trails offer beautiful views of Exit Glacier and its deep blue crevasses, the surrounding snow-capped mountains, and the glaciated terrain in the valley. Exit Glacier is the only part of Kenai Fjords National Park that is accessible by road.
The turn off to Exit Glacier is just outside of Seward Alaska. About two hours from Anchorage.
Visitors who are interested in a gorgeous but difficult trail can hike the Harding Icefield Trail. You can walk to the face in just minutes or you can take the challenging seven-mile hike (round trip) parallels Exit Glacier up to the Harding Icefield. Hikers gain 1000′ of elevation for every mile. The trail is accessible mid-June through early October.
Hikers may spot mountain goats, marmots, black bear, or moose, year-round residents of the park.
MATANUSKA GLACIER
The largest road accessible glacier in Alaska is Matanuska Glacier It is only a two-hour drive from Anchorage. The glacier itself is 4 miles wide by 26 miles long. No experience necessary! You can walk on your own or hire a guide. There are many expert guides to chose from and they provide all your gear to safely explore this glacier. This is our favorite glacier because of the great activity.
The easily accessible face is not abrupt, and the frontal ice formations have many safe routes through spectacular views of crevasses, caves and surface ponds. This area is open from March to Mid-October.
All you need is a sense of adventure, some suggested personal clothing, hiking boots, and snacks.
